Abi Beath commissioned me to help her with an audition tape for Circomedia Academy, I gladly accepted and found the experience very exciting. If you've been living under a rock then I will tell you that Circomedia is based in Bristol and they are a contemporary circus and physical theatre group, they're brilliant go check them out. I have done only a few bits of aerial tasters in my life but I absolutely love to move. What I found fascinating was the fusion we blended between contemporary dance and aerial movement. There were a few tasks that needed to be completed for her acceptance, such as a physical strength test. Then there was a short piece that I helped choreograph but was absolutely a joint effort. With both sets of skills, she was dangling out of some silks on a tree straight into a barrel jump. Abi was particularly interested in how she could combine her thought process through a piece she performed in the Surrealismo Festival last year; based on Metamorphosis and Symbiosis. We managed to highlight this element in her audition piece. Looking at grounded movements and working with a partner, including moments of togetherness and this pullback together when they were apart. I think it was less about what it looked like for me and more about the admiration of strength and endurance, the rehearsals were long and the commitment to each task and movement was always presented well. The final task which was filmed was a personal favorite; 10 movements that had been asked in a certain sequence in any shape or form you wanted. This was my time to get creative with her, from six angular shapes to a dramatic exit. What I loved most was this new dynamic and transfer of knowledge. From this, Abi was successful in her application and will be attending this year, best of luck and every success to her.
